Hats Hats Hats! Fair Isle Hat Knitting Kits for the Holidays
Hats are the perfect winter accessory and we have lots of styles and colours to choose from, all in beautiful Shetland Wool with traditional fair isle designs. And if you're new to fair isle knitting, a hat is the perfect beginner project. A selection of our fair isle hat bundles can be found here in our shop hat kits section. (Note: these bundles are yarn only; the patterns are available to purchase from the designer on Ravelry).
All hats except Tirval's Toorie use either Jamieson and Smith 2 Ply Jumper Weight of Jamieson's Spindrift. Tirval's Toorie is knit in Shetland Heritage, a slightly finer yarn between lace weight and fingering.
Shetland yarn is the best choice for fair isle and colourwork knitting for many reasons:
It is soft, durable and comes in a wide range of colours inspired from the natural beauty of the Shetland Islands and designed to work well together to create a painterly effect (we have 180 shades of combined Spindrift and 2 Ply Jumper and they can all be used interchangeably).
It is elastic and has a natural stickiness which makes stranding and steeking easier and gives the final blocked pieces a lovely smooth and finished look.
Grab one of our cozy hat bundles and enjoy the wonderful experience of fair isle knitting with natural Shetland wool!
If you loved Gudrun Johnston’s 2023 Solstice Hat kit, you’ll be happy to know the tradition is continuing with the launch of the Yöl Moorie Hat Kit, a Shetland style beret and beanie.
The kit comes in a muslin bag with 5 shades of Jamieson's of Shetland Spindrift and a postcard with pattern download code—the perfect holiday gift for a knitting friend or knit the hats yourself!
Both the beret and beanie can be made from the 5 balls in the kit by changing the colour placement, so two in one.
Kit includes:
- Five balls of Jamieson's Spindrift in Old Gold, Dog Rose, Old Rose, Grouse and Buttermilk
- Post card with pattern download
- Muslin project bag
