20121018-115428.jpg Designer: Christa Giles (inspired by Mandy Moore) Christa spotted Mandy wearing a glorious asymmetrical garter stitch shawl at a staff holiday party, and hasn't been able to stop playing with the shape since then! This is a terrific pattern to use for an unknown amount of yarn - keep going until you are almost at the end of the ball, just leaving enough to bind off loosely across the final row (the length of your remaining yarn should be about six times the width of your last row of stitches).

Gauge and needle size:

Start with needles one or two steps larger than the size recommended by the yarn label, cast on and knit following the pattern for a few inches. Decide if you are happy with the fabric or would like it to have more or less drape, and adjust your needle size larger for more drape or smaller for a more solid fabric.

Pattern:

Version 1 (solid fabric): Cast on 3 stitches. Row 1: knit to last stitch, knit into the front and back of this stitch. (1 stitch increased) Row 2: Knit to end. Repeat Row 1 and 2 until shawl is desired size or you are about to run out of yarn. Bind off all stitches loosely and block.
Version 2 (eyelet border two stitches in from long edge): Cast on 4 stitches. Row 1: Knit 2, yarn over, knit to end. Row 2: Knit to end. Repeat Row 1 and 2 until shawl is desired size or you are about to run out of yarn. Bind off all stitches loosely and block.
Version 3 (loopy edging, shown in cream Shilasdair above and in the shop) Cast on 3 stitches. Row 1: yarn over, knit to end. Row 2: knit to end. Repeat Row 1 and 2 until shawl is desired size or you are about to run out of yarn. Bind off all stitches loosely and block.
